Solid straight grain handle with good finish. Expect it to handle my old heavy Mattock/Pick with no problems. Would buy again for sure.
I have an old mattock that we found in an abandoned Canadian mining camp in 1976. The handle finally cracked under heavy use so I purchased a replacement hickory handle from Beaver Tooth. The handle was a perfect fit with a nice smooth finish. I put two raw linseed oil/turpentine treatments on the handle and put it to work. I am very happy with my purchase.
Nice handle
I inherited a cutting mattock that my father and I had used together when I was in high school and that he first got before I was born. The handle was shot but the head was good and I couldn't stand the idea of putting a fiberglass handle in this classic tool. This handle is exactly what I needed, arrived in perfect condition, and feels like excellent quality.
Well made pick handle. I'm pleased.

In the past, the only issue I've had with Beaver Tooth Handle Co has been time to ship, but I've always considered it absolutely worth it for the quality and ability to get handles with proper eye sizes for the antique tools I restore that fit without extreme amounts of sanding and grinding. This handle, however, shipped incredibly quickly, and as such I don't have a single thing to complain about. This handle had an exceptionally beautiful Grain pattern which came out beautifully after applying stain and BLO.

I put this beautiful handle into a 5# Grub Hoe/Axe head. The head is from my grandfather's farm and I found it in his hand made tool chest. I do not know if it was his or if it belonged to another relative from his generation. I shaped the handle to fit head with a tight and uniform fit allowing 1 inch to extend above it. I have not used to tool and do not know if I will, but it is ready to work.
While out in Colorado in July 2025 I found a hand forged pick head on the tailings pile of an old silver mine. Though rusty, it was in great shape for being about 140 years old. I measured the opening in pick head and upon contacting Beaver-Tooth Handle Co, they told me that they thought that their 36" Railroad / Clay Pick / Mattock Cutter Handle 5LB. #6 Eye would work in the pick head I found. Well, it fit perfectly and I now have the restored pick hanging on my wood shed wall. It's really great to have a US company still making quality replacement tool handles-- Keep up your great work !
My father had this pick axe for as long as I can remember. Over 60 yrs... I got it, used it loved it. Kept it safe in my shed when we moved 1300 klms from Manitoba. Used it here, where low and behold the handle broke in 2. Let's just say I understand things breaking after 60 yrs.... just saying.
I found Beaver -Tooth, they have the perfect handle. I ordered it. In the meantime I cleaned up the Pick Axe steel, and now they are one.
Absolutely over the moon with it.
Thank you so much for helping me restore, something I have many fond memories of my Father about. Working in the woods NE of Kenora helping my Grandparents. Missing them all.
Thanks again.
Nicely finished. Beautiful straight grain.
Good handle. Chose the higher grade. Came with optimal grain orientation and no knots or dark spots.
The pick handle was a perfect fit. A very nice piece of wood and well finished. Thanks.
This is a rugged, high quality handle. I'm 70 years old. This is the kind of handle that was on my grandfather's tools. It is beautiful, but that's not the point. My handle is going to be operating my grandfather's hand forged grub hoe.
Fits perfectly. Have about 10 more heads that need replacement handles. I will be buying more!
I refurbished a rail road pick and could not find a pick handle locally. I don’t recall how I chose beaver-tooth but when I finally got it, I was not disappointed. The handle is nicely finished and came with what appears to be a polyurethane finish. I have not fitted the handle to the pick yet, but the handle will nicely compliment the work I put into refurbishing the pick head. Excellent product; highly recommend. Just be patient, it did nearly a month for me to get mine, but the web site did clearly state it may take up to 30 days to ship.
This fits perfectly and is a nice quality handle that should last fit years. I would buy it again.
The handle was obviously made by real craftsmen. I needed a replacement handle for my mattock. The handle was a perfect fit for my #6 eye (2”x3” size). I can’t say enough good things about this handle. The 36” length was just right and the grip was perfect. Reminded me of my favorite baseball bat! I would not hesitate to order a handle from these folks. I ordered the “better” grade because the “best” was not in stock. I would have really liked to see how much nicer the “best” could have been. I will not hesitate to buy from this seller again and will gladly tell others how satisfied I am with my purchase. Thank you.
Great Handles !!The GI pick handle needed a little sanding but I got it
to fit very good. The railroad pick handle slipped right on. Thanks again!!
Have told a couple of friends about your shop and I have some axes that are in need of repair.
This was actually a company purchase and not for personal use. We bought a couple different types of handles. We do not actually need them as axe or mattocks handles, but we just use the wooden handle on its own for a specific process we perform at our facility. We have been struggling to find a place to buy hickory handles in bulk for a fair price. This was perfect. If and when I need to buy something for personal use, I will come here. I will also return when our company needs more tooling handles.
Thanks.
very nice quality, way better then I could buy from a store
As always a beautiful hickory handle crafted perfectly
Love beaver Tooth handles! Good price, nice quality, better than the hardware store!
Beautiful piece of wood...nice grain orientation and little work required to fit it.
As the Pale Rider would say, “there’s nothing like a good piece of hickory”, and these are great hickory. Straight grain for extra strength, perfectly shaped and finished, and superbly priced. One I only bought as a “non-lethal” weapon!!
Great handle, a little ticker than the factory which fits my hands better. The grain runs the right way for good strength. A few coats of linseed oil and it should provide good service. Wroth the money.
Well made product, better quality than typical hardware store handles. Shipped and received as described.
