These Beaver Tooth carpenter pencils sharpen well, I use a razor knife and shape the firm cedar, not weak soft cedar like some. The graphite they use is good and carve-able too, not so soft that the graphite breaks like some. Firm good quality graphite.

I'm not sure if it is the wood they're made of or something, but when sharpening these with a simple knife, whittling them down is no kind of challenge.... Stuff you buy from home depot might sometimes use junky soft wood or something. makes it harder to deal with. I got no complaints on these.
