The finish is smooth and they fit fairly well, maybe a little small for the 8lb mauls we use. There are several sizes of mauls and it’s hard to find an exact fit but it appears that these will work fine. I did notice that the tapered area just below the maul head seems to be a little small in diameter but time will tell.
We do have larger sizes.Personally I would use an axe eye maul. I don't like ones that just use a sledge hammer handle.
The handle is top quality. - straight, blemish/knot free. Smooth bare finish (I'm adding three coats of boiled linseed oil) and has what seems to be a very slight tapered thickening at the lower/butt end (I didn't measure), which provides a solid grip. Good quality wooden and metal wedges included. My 8 lb. splitting maul is back in business. I'll buy more handles for other tools.
Straight grain and the head fits my sledgehammer very well. Best quality handles I’ve found yet.

I have ordered a few times and I’m even more impressed every time. The holes fit perfectly and the handles are high quality. I got my great grandfathers sledge back into use for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and I trust that it will outlast any new ones. Shipping is a bit slow but with everything going on it is understandable and well worth the wait.

Ordered sledgehammer handles before and was very impressed. The most recent purchase not so much. These current handles are smaller and more expensive. Probably will not order again. Good handles just not as good as last time. Why are they so much smaller?
You ordered #2 grade handles the first time. They are cheaper yes. The eye size can vary on these as it is just whatever sledge we have that is #2 grade. Second order you picked a #1 grade handle with specified eye size.

I bought four of these handles. Each one was of top quality. No defects on any of them. Would definitely recommend these handles. Shipping does take a little time, which they are very up front about and these handles are well worth the wait. Will be buying from Beaver-Tooth again.
